چکیده

Study Design: Prospective, randomized, crossover design. Objectives: To compare the effectiveness of the Johnson & Johnson Back Plaster, the ABC Warme-Pflaster, and the ThermaCare HeatWrap on skin and paraspinal muscle temperature. Also, to compare the subjects’ heat perception for the 3 products. Background: Heat therapy is a common treatment for low back pain and disability. There are a number of products on the market that are suggested to relieve low back pain by providing warmth to the back; however, their effectiveness for increasing tissue temperature compared with heat sensation has not been tested. Methods and Measures: To measure paraspinal muscle temperature, 1 thermocouple monofilament was inserted into the paraspinal muscle 2 cm from the skin surface at the L3 level using a 20-gauge 1.25-in (3.15-cm) sterile catheter. To measure skin interface temperature, 2 thermocouples were placed on the skin at distances of 5 cm and 7 cm from the insertion site. The Isothermex was used to record temperatures to the nearest 0.1°C for 120 minutes. The subjects also rated heat perception using a 10-cm visual analog scale at 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes. Analysis of covariance models were used for statistical analysis. Results: There was a significant product × time interaction (F14,231 = 3.77, P .0001) at the intramuscular site, but there was not a significant product × time interaction (F14,231 = 1.03, P = .4228) at the skin site. Both the main effects for product (F2,33 = 41.59, P .0001) and time (F3,51 = 19.02, P .0001) were significant for the visual analog scale data. The ThermaCare

Classifying the Provably Total Functions of PA

We give a self-contained and streamlined version of the classification of the provably computable functions of PA. The emphasis is put on illuminating as good as seems possible the intrinsic computational character of the standard cut elimination process. The article is intended to be suitable for teaching purposes and just requires basic familiarity with PA and the ordinals below ε0. (Familiar...

Does positive affect influence health?

This review highlights consistent patterns in the literature associating positive affect (PA) and physical health. However, it also raises serious conceptual and methodological reservations. Evidence suggests an association of trait PA and lower morbidity and of state and trait PA and decreased symptoms and pain. Trait PA is also associated with increased longevity among older community-dwellin...

On the bipolarity of positive and negative affect.

Is positive affect (PA) the bipolar opposite of, or is it independent of, negative affect (NA)? Previous analyses of this vexing question have generally labored under the false assumption that bipolarity predicts an invariant latent correlation between PA and NA. The predicted correlation varies with time frame, response format, and items selected to define PA and NA. The observed correlation a...

An Introduction to Probabilistic Automata

This paper provides an elementary introduction to the probabilistic automaton (PA) model, which has been developed by Segala. We describe how distributed systems with discrete probabilities can be modeled and analyzed by means of PAs. We explain how the basic concepts for the analysis of nonprobabilistic automata can be extended to probabilistic systems. In particular, we treat the parallel com...

Processed aconite root prevents cold-stress-induced hypothermia and immuno-suppression in mice.

Processed aconite root (PA) is a crude drug used in traditional Chinese or Japanese medicine to generate heat in interior body and dispel cold. We evaluated the effects of PA on hypothermia and reduction in the activity of natural killer (NK) cells in mice exposed to chronic cold stress. Male mice were reared at 4 degrees C, and powdered PA was administered for 10 d as a food additive. Core bod...

Extracellular ATP both inhibits and facilitates calcium channel currents in acutely dissociated rat nucleus tractus solitarius.

The postsynaptic actions of exogenously applied adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) were investigated in nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) of the rat. Whole cell patch-clamp recordings were used to examine the regulation of voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels (VDCCs) currents (I(Ca)) by ATP in freshly dissociated NTS. Application of ATP inhibited I(Ca) from -905 pA to -741 pA. In addition to this inhibi...
